blinkenlichten - Origin of the Term

The term "blinkenlichten" dates back to the 1950ies forming the final of a satirical poster in mock German attached to numbers of huge mainframes at IBM and Stanford making fun of German engineer's jargon as well as German liking for warning boards:

Achtung!

In plain English, this parody may, roughly, read:
"Attention! To all visitors and non-technical peeping onlookers: Do not poke your fingers or grab inside the computing machine. Otherwise, the spring assembly may snap and fuses may blow popping and spitting sparks. Not to be handled by dumbheads. Rubbernecking sightseers must keep their cotton-picking hands in the pockets. So, relax and watch the blinking lights."
